Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte) — Made With Fresh Farm Turmeric

Every fall when we harvest our turmeric here on our 40 acres in Oxford, North Carolina, the first thing we do is make a pot of golden milk. It is our way of marking the season — the rhizomes come out of the ground bright orange inside, fragrant, and alive in a way that no dried powder can replicate.
Golden milk has been a wellness staple for centuries, rooted in Ayurvedic tradition. When you make it with fresh turmeric from Granville County soil, you get a depth of flavor and a concentration of natural compounds that simply does not exist in the spice aisle. This is the version we drink at home, and we are glad to share it.

What You Will Need
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh turmeric root | 1-inch piece, grated | Or 1 tsp dried if fresh is unavailable |
| Whole milk or oat milk | 2 cups | Full-fat gives the creamiest result |
| Honey | 1–2 teaspoons | Raw honey preferred |
| Coconut oil or ghee | ½ teaspoon | Helps absorb fat-soluble compounds |
| Black pepper | 1 small pinch | Increases absorption significantly |
| Cinnamon | ¼ teaspoon | Adds warmth |
| Fresh ginger (optional) | ½-inch piece, grated | Pairs beautifully with turmeric |

Instructions
Step 1 — Grate your turmeric. Scrub the fresh turmeric root and grate it finely on a microplane or box grater. You do not need to peel it. Note: turmeric stains — use gloves or wash hands immediately.
Step 2 — Warm the milk. Pour the milk into a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the grated turmeric, ginger (if using), cinnamon, black pepper, and coconut oil. Whisk gently to combine.
Step 3 — Simmer gently. Heat until steaming but not boiling — about 5 minutes. Stir frequently. The milk will turn a beautiful deep golden color.
Step 4 — Strain and sweeten. Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a mug. Stir in honey to taste. Drink warm.
Step 5 — Iced version. Let cool, then pour over ice for a golden iced latte. Add a splash of vanilla extract for a café-style version.

Why Black Pepper Matters
The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, is fat-soluble and poorly absorbed on its own. Black pepper contains piperine, which increases curcumin absorption significantly. The pinch of pepper and the fat from coconut oil or whole milk make this drink far more effective than turmeric alone. Traditional golden milk recipes have always included both.

A Note on Our Turmeric
We grow turmeric in our greenhouse and fields here in Granville County, North Carolina. It thrives in our warm summers and comes out of the ground with a deep orange color and a peppery, earthy aroma. We sell fresh turmeric rhizomes at the Carrboro Farmers' Market every Saturday from 7 AM to 12 PM, and when in season, we offer well-rooted turmeric starts for home gardeners.
