Anti-Inflammatory Tonic Shot — All Three Rhizomes From the Farm
Written by the family at 'Tween Towns Farm · Oxford, NC · Granville County
---
We grow ginger, turmeric, and galangal here in Oxford, North Carolina, and this tonic shot is the most direct way to experience all three together. It is not subtle. It is sharp, warming, earthy, and bright all at once — a concentrated dose of everything these three rhizomes have to offer.
We make a batch of these every fall when the harvest comes in. A small shot in the morning, especially through cold and flu season, has become part of our routine on the farm. We are sharing what we do with what we grow.

What You Will Need (makes about 8–10 shots)
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh ginger root | 4-inch piece | Scrubbed, no need to peel |
| Fresh turmeric root | 3-inch piece | Scrubbed |
| Fresh galangal | 2-inch piece | Scrubbed |
| Fresh lemon juice | ½ cup | About 3–4 lemons |
| Fresh orange juice | ¼ cup | Adds sweetness and vitamin C |
| Black pepper | ¼ teaspoon | Essential for turmeric absorption |
| Raw honey | 1–2 tablespoons | To taste |
| Cayenne pepper (optional) | 1 small pinch | Adds heat |
---
Instructions
Juicer method: Run ginger, turmeric, and galangal through a juicer. Combine the juice with lemon juice, orange juice, black pepper, honey, and cayenne. Stir well.
Blender method: Roughly chop the rhizomes and blend with the citrus juices and ¼ cup water until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, pressing to extract all the liquid. Stir in black pepper, honey, and cayenne.
Storage: Refrigerate in a sealed jar for up to 5 days. Shake before each use as the mixture will settle. For longer storage, freeze in ice cube trays and thaw as needed.
---
How to Take It
Take 1–2 oz (a standard shot) in the morning, ideally with a small amount of food. The flavor is intense — that is the point. Chase with a glass of water if needed.
